Podiatrist-Patient Relationship

The podiatrist’s role in the partnership

  • Podiatrists should keep accurate and comprehensive records of their consultations with you.
  • Podiatrists should provide patients with advice of all the treatment options available to their knowledge.
  • Podiatrists should try to follow appointment times to reduce waiting for patients, or let patients know if they are running behind schedule. Patients can expect Podiatrists to provide a comfortable reception lounge.
  • Podiatrists should provide clear information about the billing procedures of the practice.
  • APodA members adhere to a code of ethics which includes an extensive section covering responsibilities to patients.

Your role in the partnership

  • Ask questions about your treatment, procedures and medications.
  • Tell your podiatrist about your past health problems.
  • Follow prescribed treatment.
  • Contact your podiatrist immediately if you suffer any problems following your treatment.
  • Try to keep your appointments and notify your podiatrist if you are unable to attend.
  • If you think you have a complex problem or have a number of issues to talk about – ask for a longer appointment when booking.
  • Listen to the podiatrist’s advice.
  • Your podiatrist will discuss the need for tests or referrals if they will help you.
